Otoplasty is a procedure designed to correct deformities of the ears.  Most commonly patients who seek otoplasty have protruding ears, that may lack the folds and contours of normal ears.  The procedure is an outpatient procedure (home the same day) generally carried out under local anaesthetic.  The results are usually permanent.

Before Surgery:

Some issues considered at the time of your consultation include:

  • Your general health
  • Previous trauma or surgery to the ears
  • Shape, prominence and asymmetries of the ears

The Surgery:

Otoplasty for protruding ears is performed through an incision on the back of the ear.  The ear cartilage is reshaped and "set-back" closer to the scalp by scoring the cartilage (to allow it to bend back), and inserting a series of permanent sutures to hold the cartilage in its new position and shape.

Complications such as infection and bleeding are rare otoplasty.  These as well as risks and complications such as numbness and poor scarring will be discussed in detail at the time of consultation.

After Surgery:

A head dressing is worn until the first post-operative check (within 48 hours).  Following this a headband is worn for 2 - 4 weeks after surgery.

  • 1st post-operative visit within 48  hours after surgery:  to remove dressing, to check for bleeding, level of discomfort, to answer any immediate concerns.  Patients may shower and wash hair.
  • 1st week after surgery; headband worn, swelling begins to subside, resume normal daily activities, no contact sports, no heavy lifting or working out.
  • 7 - 14 days after surgery; return to work / school, continue wearing headband.
  • 3 - 6 months, numbness resolves.
